Yesterday I spent the day speaking to six sixth-grade English classes about the writing life, how I came to be published, the pitfalls of publishing, and the writing process. The classes were very attentive. Students asked a lot of questions, and several expressed a genuine interest in writing. It was most impressive.
I’ve spoken to the same teacher’s classes each year for several years now, and I always come away impressed by the students’ attitudes and interest. I’ve remained in touch with some students from past years. These are fine young people who give great hope for the future. Whether any of them will actually become writers I can’t say, of course, but I’m confident that they will contribute in some way to making our world a better place.
